As part of its Galeria 2.0 modernization plan, the Galeria department store chain is doing more than just revamping its stores. In 2022, the retail company also completely overhauled its e-commerce and omnichannel processes and technology. In addition to launching a new online store and integrating e-commerce processes into the SAP landscape, the focus is on providing a unified view of all inventory—a key prerequisite for on-time delivery and product availability in times of increasing supply chain bottlenecks.
With the support of the retail technology specialists at CAS AG, Galeria was able to implement the SAP Omnichannel Article Availability and Sourcing (SAP OAA) module for omnichannel product availability in a short period of time, closely adhering to the standard. Since July 2022, real-time inventory data from all stores and distribution centers—as well as from selected suppliers and marketplace participants—has been made available for use in omnichannel and e-commerce processes. Thanks to the rules managed in SAP OAA, goods are always shipped from the optimal location.
Customers of the newly renovated Galeria.de online store can now reliably see whether an item is in stock and how long it will take to deliver it. In this process, the merchandise is shipped either from a fulfillment or distribution center, from a store, directly from the supplier, or from an affiliated marketplace partner. Customers can also reliably reserve items using Click & Reserve and Click & Collect to pick them up at a specific store.
Routing—which determines where each item should be shipped from—is now calculated in SAP OAA. The software module allows department store operators to define even complex rules for this—and to modify them in a user-friendly way—much more effectively than the legacy system. For example, retail managers can specify that perfume should always be shipped from the central warehouse, and determine in which cases the number of packages should be reduced and in which cases the delivery time should be shortened. Above all, this allows Galeria to reduce the burden on individual stores caused by ship-from-store shipping by distributing orders evenly among the department stores. Rules can also be easily changed on a temporary basis—for example, to ensure that a store has a higher minimum sales volume for in-store sales before Christmas or during a promotional period.
With the implementation of SAP OAA, Galeria can now manage all omnichannel processes consistently within a single system. The department store operator is thus well-prepared to meet new challenges in the areas of e-commerce and omnichannel sales. With the introduction of SAP OAA, Galeria was able to replace numerous software systems that were only loosely connected via interfaces. “We benefit significantly from reducing the number of solutions we use—and thereby cutting costs and minimizing disruptions,” explains Ludger Banse, Head of IT at Galeria.
CAS AG has been providing Galeria with highly successful support on key SAP projects since 2018. At that time, our consultants helped Karstadt implement SAP CAR, which serves as the foundation for inventory management with SAP OAA. The experience CAS AG had gained through numerous SAP CAR projects at well-known retail companies was a great asset to the department store operator.
That is why choosing CAS AG for the SAP OAA implementation was an easy decision. The department store chain’s IT teams were not disappointed. They were once again very satisfied with the support.
The consultants also work exceptionally well with the users, as the CAS AG team understands their perspective very well. Galeria continues to rely on the support of CAS AG to implement optimizations in the SAP CAR environment.
Galeria’s software team had already successfully completed the migration of the former Kaufhof stores to Karstadt’s software architecture in 2020, so that all of the group’s department stores are now benefiting from the new processes.
